A 30-minute walk into a remote Eastern Region community became a journey of hope for a young girl facing extraordinary hardship.
In September 2026, the Health Education & Entrepreneurship Development Foundation (HEED Foundation) travelled to Ehiamenkyene to support Mavis Asare, a young girl who has lost both of her parents and is now being cared for by her grandparents under difficult circumstances.
After learning about Mavis’ situation, HEED Foundation chose to respond with practical support focused on one of the most important foundations for a child’s future: education.
Going the Extra Distance
The journey to Ehiamenkyene began in Accra and continued through Koforidua and Osiem before the HEED Foundation team reached the area.
But the journey did not end there.
To reach the church and surrounding community where the outreach took place, the team continued on foot for approximately 30 minutes.
The difficult access offered a glimpse into one of the realities faced by some underserved communities in Ghana. Distance from major towns can make access to services, resources and outside assistance more challenging.
For HEED Foundation, however, the distance only reinforced the importance of reaching communities where support may be needed most.
Investing in Mavis’ Education
During the visit, HEED Foundation presented Mavis with educational materials and financial assistance to help support her schooling.
The items included textbooks, exercise books, markers, paints, pencils and a sketchbook or drawing book, together with financial support.
For families experiencing financial hardship, basic educational supplies can become significant expenses. Ensuring that children have access to learning materials can help them participate more fully in school, develop their abilities and remain encouraged about their education.
HEED Foundation’s assistance was therefore intended to do more than meet an immediate need.
It was also a message to Mavis: her present circumstances do not have to define her future.
One Child’s Story, a Wider Mission
Although Mavis was at the heart of the visit, the outreach also gave HEED Foundation an opportunity to connect with the wider Ehiamenkyene community.
The Foundation believes that meaningful community development requires responding to people at different stages of life and addressing needs that affect education, health, economic opportunity and overall wellbeing.
HEED Foundation’s broader work includes educational support, health education, health screening, entrepreneurship development and community outreach.
The visit to Ehiamenkyene therefore reflects a larger commitment to reaching people beyond major population centres and extending practical assistance to communities that may receive less attention.
Every Child Deserves to Be Seen
Behind statistics about poverty, access and underserved communities are individual lives and personal stories.
Mavis’ story is one of them.
Having lost both parents and now living with grandparents who are also facing challenges, she represents the kind of child for whom timely support and encouragement can make a lasting difference.
Sometimes that support comes through a major programme. Other times, it begins with something as simple as a school book, a set of pencils, financial assistance or the knowledge that someone cared enough to make the journey.
For HEED Foundation, compassion is most meaningful when it is followed by action.
Continuing the Journey
HEED Foundation remains committed to supporting children, families and communities through practical programmes and outreach initiatives.
The organisation recognises that lasting change is often built one person, one family and one community at a time.
The Ehiamenkyene outreach is one example of that commitment — reaching beyond the usual routes, listening to individual needs and providing support that can help create opportunities for a better future.
As HEED Foundation continues its work, the organisation hopes to reach more underserved communities, support more children like Mavis and expand opportunities that promote education, health, self-reliance and hope.
