My Journey from a Pregnant Student to a Physician Assistant Testimony of Beatrice Appiagyei | Assin Fosu, Ghana. My name is Beatrice Appiagyei, and I come from a village in the Assin Fosu area of Ghana. I want to share a story that began eight years ago, in 2018, when a simple encounter with a volunteer from HEED Foundation changed the direction of my life.At the time, I was a young student who had become pregnant. I was considering dropping out of school because I was uncertain about my future and how I could continue my education while expecting a child. Then one day, HEED Foundation visited our village, and I met a wonderful woman named Doris.I still remember that day vividly. She had walked for about an hour to reach our village, and it even rained during the visit. Despite the difficult journey and the fact that it was already time for her to leave, Doris stayed behind to speak with me.She encouraged me not to give up on my education because of my pregnancy. She made me understand that becoming a mother did not have to mean the end of my dreams. She also took the time to speak with our parents. The young man who had gotten me pregnant was also considering leaving school to take care of me. Doris encouraged us, and those conversations made a difference.I listened to her advice. I stayed in school. And today, eight years later, I am a Physician Assistant! The young man who was also thinking about abandoning his education is now pursuing a doctoral program.Looking back, I cannot help but think about how different our lives might have been if we had given up on our education. There is something else very special about this story. When I gave birth to my daughter, I named her Doris, after the woman whose words of encouragement meant so much to me during one of the most difficult moments of my life. For years, I had lost contact with Doris, but I never forgot her kindness. Recently, I managed to get her phone number from the teacher who had accompanied the foundation to our village in 2018. I wanted her to know what had become of the young pregnant girl she once encouraged.Today, I am grateful not only for what she did for me but also for the work HEED Foundation continues to do in communities like ours.As a Physician Assistant, I would be happy to offer my services whenever HEED Foundation needs healthcare volunteers. It would be an honor to give back through the same organization whose volunteer encouraged me when I needed it most.To Doris and everyone at HEED Foundation, thank you. Your efforts are making a real difference in people’s lives, even when you may not immediately see the results.I pray that you never stop doing this work, no matter the challenges, because you have made a great impact on people like me.God richly bless you all.— Beatrice AppiagyeiPhysician Assistant | Ghana
